The scenic drive, known as Grand Mesa, begins near Mesa Colorado on the worlds largest flattop mountain. This area is home to over 300 lakes, interpretive indian exhibits and trails and historic buildings found on the State Register of Historic Properties. We took some great pictures at the Colorado National Monument above Grand Junction.  We stopped there on our last night of vacation. We had beautiful views of Fruita and Grand Junction from the campground.  The canyon was very beautiful coming in from Green River to the summit.  We drove out  through the canyon to Grand Junction. There were plenty of camp spaces available at 4:00pm.  The Saddlehorn campground filled up by 8:30pm.  It was popular because of the nice views of the valley below.  We saw bluebirds, catbirds, a type of dove and vultures floating on the thermals in the sky.  I saw a few chipmunks around the campground.  The restrooms were new and very modern.  They were clean and the walks well taken care of.  The camp host was very nice and friendly.  There is a very nice visitors center with souvenirs.  They have a few picnic tables and a telescope for viewing the beautiful canyon from the visitors center.  It is staffed by park rangers.  The roads were in very good condition.  Fruita, Palisade (where they grow the famous peaches), wineries and grape orchards, and Grand Junction are close to the Monument.

Dinosaur Diamond is an exciting drive along the very western edge of Colorado. Just north of the town of Dinosaur you can tour the Dinosaur National Monument. A shuttle from the visitor center will take you to the trailhead of Fossil Discovery Trail where you are guaranteed to see fossils of these ancient beasts that once walked in this region as well as ancient art and amazing views. Our family enjoys a leisurely float or raft adventure while in the area. Travel through Grand Valley along the famous Colorado River and its confluence with the fertile Green River. An outdoor enthusiasts playground where you can take a one to five day rafting trip where you can get up close and personal with incredible scenery and wildlife. Grand Valley is also known for its many fruit orchards. See views of the towering monoliths that mark the landscape of the true west found at Colorado National Monument which is at the end of this byway. Climb the steep 450 foot steep face of Independence Monument where the view up top makes your climb worthwhile. Enjoy hiking, biking and ranger led programs.
